I decided to go with the Westinghouse AC panels for the photovoltaic system because they have mounting rails built into the panel frame (which makes for faster and easier installation, and doesn’t look so bulky).

The panels are factory integrated with a micro-inverter which makes the package a UL listed AC generator (meaning each panel is its own generator, and can act independently from the others). If a shade tree is covering part or some of the panels, as is the case in my yard for part of the day, it won’t shut down the entire system like a macro-inverter would. Think of the way Christmas lights stop working when one bulb goes out – that is how macro-inverter system works. The system we installed avoids this problem.

In addition the micro-inverters allow me to verify energy production in real time, over time. There are two very cool online tools that allow me to monitor the system and and verify the credit I get from the power company. The two links are available from the March newsletter, or by clicking here, and here.

The monitoring system can also alert me to any maintenance issues that may arise during the life of the system, which based on actuarial tables, is probably longer than my own lifetime.

Here are a few key milestones in the life of this project:

October 15, 2012: Requested quote from Westinghouse

November 13, 2012: Panels and installation material arrive

November 15, 2012: Apply for permit

December 10, 2102: Permit approved

December 27, 2012: Installation Start

January 29, 2013: Final Inspection

February 1, 2013: FPL approves system operation (grid connection)
